Comcast Reports Biggest Week In Internet History Driven By Gaming and Live Sports Streaming

Philadelphia, PA

Comcast recorded the biggest week in Internet history with the double header of a gaming launch and live sporting event occurring days apart, last week.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 pre-launch accounted for 19 percent of total network traffic; the fifth highest Internet traffic event in Comcast network history. Thursday Night Football and the official availability of the gaming download accounted for 26 percent of total network traffic.

The top five biggest Internet traffic events on Comcast’s network occurred within the last 10 months and were driven by Xfinity customers streaming live sports and downloading video games. In January 2024, the AFC Wildcard game on Peacock consumed 30 percent of Internet traffic and set the record for the most-streamed live event in U.S. history.

As sports consumption shifts to live streaming and gaming continues its rapid ascent, these big moments in online entertainment are shifting Internet traffic and patterns at an unprecedented rate.

“This same gaming and live sports combo also happened in 2022 and at the time it was one of the biggest days we’d ever seen on our network. Last week’s occurrence was 14 percent higher,” said Elad Nafshi, Chief Network Officer, Comcast.

The shifting landscape of sports and gaming content is ushering in a new era of entertainment. As the nation’s largest Internet provider with the largest converged network, Comcast delivers the highest quality content with the lowest lag and best reliability to Xfinity customers. To make this possible, Comcast has evolved its network to:

  • Put more computing power closer to customers to deliver a better and faster streaming experience,
  • Lead the way in developing and deploying low-latency tech that improves the responsiveness and performance of interactive apps like gaming and videoconferencing,
  • Deliver greater reliability, even in periods of high-demand and extreme weather, with AI-powered technology from the heart of the network all the way to customer homes.

Comcast’s network is a culmination of years of research, technological breakthroughs, and massive investment – including more than $20 billion since 2019 alone – in innovation, development, and infrastructure. For more information about Comcast’s network, click here.
