Network Innovation Delivering Business Solutions at Scale

Comcast Business is hyper scaling the availability of its Dedicated Internet connectivity solution, which provides business customers with unparalleled speeds, 99.99 percent uptime, and proactive network monitoring. We spoke with Dan Rice, VP, Access Network Engineering, about the innovation propelling this rapid expansion and how Comcast’s AI-powered network continues to deliver more for our customers.

Q: Most people probably aren’t that familiar with Dedicated Internet, so could you explain for us?

A: Dedicated Internet has been a part of Comcast Business’s offering since day one. It provides customers with a private, one-to-one ethernet connection to our network, which means their traffic doesn’t flow through the network together with the traffic of any other business or residential customers. This ‘dedicated’ connection enables us to provide a highly secure, highly reliable service to our customers with service level agreements that meet their exacting standards.

Historically, like most other providers, we’ve primarily delivered Dedicated Internet to customers via fiber connection because traditional cable only offered the basic requirements for Dedicated Internet.

Q: If there’s already Dedicated Internet over fiber, what is the need for Dedicated Internet over existing network? What benefit does this expansion bring to Comcast Business customers?

A: While Dedicated Internet over fiber is a solution for many of our CB customers, it’s not a perfect solution. For some, the cost and timetable for fiber installation can prove prohibitive, especially for small and medium sized business looking to move quickly and cost-efficiently to serve their key customers. Yet our Business Internet delivered to millions of customers over our existing network, which serves many of our customers incredibly well, doesn’t come with the same Service Level Agreements as our Dedicated Internet offering, an important differentiator to some customers.

We knew that we could serve more customers more effectively if we could provide a connection that could offer the quality of service and support of Dedicated Internet over fiber but with the speed and ease of installation of Business Internet. Fortuitously, we found ourselves at a stage in our network digitization and virtualization journey, what we call Project Genesis, that enabled us to support just such a solution through Dedicated Internet to millions of businesses already connected to our network.

Now, with Project Genesis technology and network upgrades, we’re able to provide an advanced connectivity solution that provides businesses a direct Ethernet Internet connection with faster symmetrical speeds, robust Service Level Agreements (SLAs), and proactive network monitoring and issue resolution more cost effectively and with significantly faster order to activation.

Q: So, how does this new Dedicated Internet offering work?

A: Interestingly, the technology behind this innovation isn’t new. The specifications for what our industry standards organization CableLabs refers to as Business Services over DOCSIS (BSOD) have been around for a while. What has been missing is a next generation AI-powered, virtualized reliable network running on digital optics and advanced Radio Frequency (RF) technologies capable of delivering on the standard at the speed of business.

This is the network we’ve developed through our industry-leading work to digitize and virtualize our network architecture and infrastructure. Simply put, we’re transforming our network from one largely reliant on static hardware and set innovation cycles to one infused with artificial intelligence and machine-learning driven technology, making it smarter, more nimble, more reliable and unbelievably responsive.

This work has already driven meaningful enhancements to our customers’ connected experience in the form of greater reliability, more speed and better security. And our engineering team recognized that we could further leverage this work to better serve our business customers by creating a new option for Dedicated Internet.

This is just one example of how our continued investment in our network and the development of groundbreaking AI technology delivers new opportunities for our customers, and the future only holds more.
