Inspiring Youth for STEAM Careers in a Connected World

By Marge Jackson and Broderick D. Johnson

The demands for talent in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) continues to rise. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, these occupations are projected to increase by 10.4% by 2033. That’s why Comcast NBCUniversal was proud to host our third STEAM Symposium, “The Future is Now: STEAM in a Connected World,” which brought together future leaders to expose them to the skills and resources they will need to launch impactful careers in our increasingly digital world.

Harnessing the combined strengths of our family of brands – Comcast, Xfinity, and Universal Destinations & Experiences – we created an unforgettable experience for 250 first-generation college-bound students at Universal Orlando Resort. In partnership with the Council for Opportunity in Education (COE) – a not-for-profit organization that promotes equity in college access – this experience was part of Project UP, Comcast’s $1 billion commitment to empower the next generation of innovators, entrepreneurs, storytellers, and creators.

Students from across the country heard from a diverse group of Comcast NBCUniversal engineers, creatives, journalists, and executives. They explored the cutting-edge technology behind Xfinity products and services, delved into the immersive designs of the new Universal Epic Universe, learned about the power of news broadcasting at Telemundo, and so much more. The students got a behind-the-scenes look into the dynamic world that drives our company forward, igniting their imaginations and sparking aspirations to pursue their own STEAM careers. Our professionals also shared their own journeys, offering powerful insights and valuable advice while reflecting on the challenges they faced and the mentorships that guided them.

During the trip, students were given the opportunity to network with dozens of colleges, universities, and leading STEAM organizations. They got to engage in hands-on demonstrations and learn about the STEAM programs they offer. In addition, we also surprised all 250 students with their very own laptops, empowering them with devices they need to continue their education and propel them into their careers. To top it all off, we gave each student four tickets to see the highly anticipated film Wicked, while five of their chaperones were surprised with new cellphones, along with a complimentary full year of Xfinity Mobile service.

“Being at this STEAM event has opened my eyes to so many new experiences and opportunities I never thought possible. It's amazing to be surrounded by people who are in the same position as me, all working toward our goals,” said Genesis, High School Student from Marshall University Upward Bound TRIO Program.

For someone who doesn't always have the chance to be seen, this event has made me feel like I belong. It has helped me build connections and see myself on the path to a future job, full of possibilities.

At Comcast NBCUniversal, we’re dedicated to inspiring the next generation of leaders. We’re excited to see these students return home, energized to explore careers they’ve never even considered before. We hope this experience ignited a passion for STEAM within them that will send them toward a future of unlimited possibilities.
